Therapy Treatment Models

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

Cognitive Behavorial Therapy is a model that focuses on how thoughts impact feelings and actions.  In focusing on the thought processes that happen, both consciously and subconsciously, we can become more aware and mindful about how they affect our resulting behaviors. Goals of this therapy model include an in mindfulness, becoming aware of unhelpful ways of thinking and behavior patterns, understanding motivations, and developing healthy coping strategies.

Trauma Therapy/EMDR

Trauma is the result of an overwhelming situation or ongoing experience that leaves a wound (physically, emotionally, or mentally) in someone. This could range from experiences of neglect or abuse, loss, situations of danger, violence, or threat to one's life. The impact of trauma can be long lasting and difficult without treatment.  Trauma therapy begins with the building of trust between the therapist and client. Together they can uncover both the initial or ongoing trauma experience and its effect on the client. Trauma therapy models such as EMDR clarify perspective on how the trauma impacted the individual and offer a path to begin to see oneself and the world differently.

Play/Sandtray Therapy

Play therapy is a model primarily used with children based on research that they learn and process their experiences through play. In utilizing games, art activities, and role play, children can express themselves fully and also learn coping skills, problem solving strategies, and how to manage big emotions.

Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT enables clients to accept difficult emotions or experiences and move toward actions that brings value and enrichment to their lives.

Other treatment models that I frequently use in session include Solution- Focused Brief Therapy, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Attachment Theory.

My Approach

Understanding that the approach in therapy should be unique to the needs of the client, I seek to utilize evidence-based treatment strategies that take into consideration each client's interests, cultural background, religious views, and personal ideas.

Goals for therapy are developed collaboratively between the clinician and the client to ensure that the direction of sessions is the most beneficial in addressing the needs of the client.

Frequency of sessions and scheduling can be adjusted throughout the counseling process. The overall goal of counseling is to facilitate client empowerment and growth resulting in a sense of well-being.
